点评:The library is located Piazza del Nettuno and we found it easy to identify by the number of young people sat on the steps outside. It is completely free to enter and is a stunning building. From what I read online and from some of the images around the main hall, it used to be a basketball court and the entrance hall was a telegraph exchange. It now looks like a library that is accommodating of everyone. We saw an area we believe was a creche, there was a well attended cafe with good prices to one side and also an art exhibition going on in the main area. The main hall has a glass floor through which you can view excavations.
This was our main reason for visiting. If you follow the signs (or if you don't see them, enter the main hall and take the stairs immediately to your left) You'll end up in the basement. I think you then turn right and there is a hallway with a friendly gentleman who asked our nationality. Entrance to the excavations is free but donations are welcome. You'll walk through an area with information (in Italian) about the library building going back in time and pass a large vault style door (we believe this area was once part of the bank). At the end of the corridor you enter the excavations, which you walk through and above on a metal walkway. The signs are in both Italian and English so you can read about what you are seeing. There are a couple of wells and some streets that are easy to make out. I think there was also a cistern. The earliest parts I believe are from the 8th or 9th century. If you happen to look up you can see the feet of the people stood in the main hall above you. It's really interesting. and well worth visiting.
