点评:Viviana Girola gave our family a private 1/2 day of Siena (I think she only gives private tours). She was accommodating and professional from beginning to end and we greatly enjoyed and appreciated our tour. I highly recommend her.
She helped in our trip planning. I originally thought the best way to get to Siena from Florence was by train but Viviana pointed out that would result in a longer travel time than by bus and the train station was a distance from the walled city. She gave us a link to get the bus schedules and met us at the bus stop.
We asked Viviana to orient our tour to the aspects of Siena that made it special and to showcase some of her favorite places. She walked us through a grocery store and summarized the wines of the Tuscan region as well as the different grades of quality for each area. She walked us through the meat counter and then the cheese and pasta areas. We liked the store so much that we went back after the tour and bought salami and cheese for a later snack.
I was surprised that Siena had commercialized so much since we last visited. It seems every big brand retail name had a store in one section of town. We didn't spend any time in them but she gave us a history of the banking prowess of the town in its earlier days. Many of the bank buildings survive among the retail stores.
We liked the detailed history she gave of the districts within the town. If you are baptized in a district, you're a member of that district for life. Even if you marry someone from another district or move away. As we walked through one of the districts, she pointed out the public art work that displayed that district's distinctive emblem (in this case a rhinoceros with tree).
Our tour ended a the Piazza del Campo where the Palio is run. Everyone knows about the Palio but she showed us a video of one year's race in which the rider fell off his horse, but the horse finished first. It's not the rider that wins each race. It's the horse!
As we parted, we asked her for a restaurant recommendation for lunch. She gave us one name but said it was mostly patronized by visitors. The other was called Finestra which was nearby on a side street off the Piazza del Campo. We tried it and were very pleased. It had a large menu. We ordered appetizers, pastas, main courses and dessert and were pleased with all of our choices. The waiter spoke English well and it wasn't expensive.
Everyone in the family felt she had given us a very personalized and relevant tour.
