点评:We made a detour and visited the park on a damp December day . We first visited the area many, many years ago. The oratory and environs are linked to St. Finbarr, the patron saint of Cork . There’s a tradition of rounds . Rounds are a religious observance whereby a person undertakes a set of rituals as they walk around the site . Specific prayers are linked to various geographical points.
Strictly speaking , the religious site does not form part of the park. To us , it is an integral part of the valley .
To enter the park proper by car , you must pay . This is done by tapping your card at the barrier . We chose to walk from the oratory area. There is a road loop that could be driven . There are several hiking tracks to suit most abilities and fitness levels . The river Lee has its source in the valley and you crisscross the river throughout the park . There are a number of pretty cascades close to the main track. There are also a number of places to sit and admire the views. A wedding ceremony was taking place outdoors within the park . In typical Irish fashion, the heavens opened and the bride and her party had to beat a hasty retreat . Dress for the weather , it can change more quickly here than elsewhere. On our return to the car , a strong wind had whipped up and the lake waters were spattering our car
