Great experience on the Steam Train.

点评：We booked up a compartment for max 6 people on the Watercress Line RAT (Real Ale Train) on Saturday evening 30 August. I will say we do find the cost for a private compartment quite steep at £200. In that price each person does get one FREE drinks voucher but this is only on Beer & Cider and NOT wine as we found out. After the free beer/cider you then have to buy your drinks and Beer is £4 , Cider £4. The evening does end up costing quite a bit but we all do love the old steam train and stepping back in time.
The RAT leaves Alton station promptly at 7pm and you can board the train from 6:30pm onwards. On this occasion the food carriage had a problem and we all had to get off and collect any pre-ordered food at Alresford in the canteen area. The food was actually superb. All six of us had the Meat Chilli with Rice & Nachos at £7:20 each. They did have other items for sale and we snapped up a couple of excellent sausage rolls at £3 each.
The train was not packed but there were enough of us to have a great evening which finally finishes back at Alton station at 10:30pm.
This year was there was a hic-cup as non of us were aware that the train line from Alton back towards London was closed and all trains had been cancelled. They laid a bus on but this was not going to arrive until 11:20pm. With that news we managed to order up a 6-seater Taxi which was waiting for us at Aldershot to take us back to Farnham/Aldershot.
If you have never been on the RAT it is worth going for the experience but just remember it can be costly and to be quite honest June/July would be better months to enjoy the countryside views etc.
