点评:A wonderful stop to a historic large stone ring fort near Cahersiveen on the Ring of Kerry drive. This amazing dry stone structure - tall with thick walls - was built on a rocky outcrop now in the middle of a farmer's sheep grazing field. It's just a short walk on a well worn grassy and gravel path to the fort from the parking lot, large enough for coaches; there is a stile to walk through. A sign at the fort provides information about this structure believed to have been built 1000 years ago.
Upon entering the fort through a narrow low opening, we saw a smaller dry stone circle. This was the now roofless dwelling which had thick 5 foot walls as its foundation. Inside it, we could see a flat stone with curved indents which were probably used for cooking. Conveniently, the dwelling had 2 exits/entrances.
However, the attraction of this site for me was the many stone stairs built all around the interior wall of the fort. These stairs led to the top of the fort where we could see wonderful views of the surrounding area - useful, too, to see your adversary approach. It was great fun to climb those stairs and remarkable that they were not closed off to the public in order to preserve them. We had the fort to ourselves, but did meet another coach tour walking towards the fort as we left. 45 minutes is a good time allowance for this visit.
