点评:I visited Kilmalkedar Church with my wife, kids (14, 11, 7yo), and parents (70s) on a cloudy, but pleasant June day. This activity was enjoyed by all parties, and I do recommend it as a fairly short (less than 1 hour) family-friendly stop.
The church at Kilmalkedar is a ruin, but there is a lot more there than meets the eye at first. There is a lot of carved detail here and there, making the visit a little like an Easter egg hunt. Enough remains of the building for the imagination to fill in the blanks, and really appreciate what this beautiful building must have been like in its heyday.
The church is situated within a cemetery that is filled with a wide variety of monuments from different times and in different styles. Many of the inscriptions are in the Irish language, and some are even fairly recent. In this way, the cemetery is a little like a time line showing the changes in burial monuments.
The situation around the church is also lovely, as it nestles in hills and looks down onto the sea. Overall, this even kept the interest of our youngest for 20-30 minutes, and so I think that it is a good family stop. There is enough to see to keep children busy, and the qualify edified the adults.
