点评:I’ve been on a lot of Gilded Age Mansion tours, but this house is extraordinary at 25,000 feet of serious art and craftsmanship. Every corner, window and fireplace is magnificent. How fortunate that it was saved from demolition by a group of wealthy businessmen who bought it and gave it to the American College of Surgeons to use as headquarters. Great black and white photos in each room show what the rooms looked like back in its heyday. Gift shop on the third floor has lots of things you’d actually want to purchase. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable and approached us, answered questions and gave us additional history on who all lived in the house through the years. Even the security guard, a delightful African American woman, regaled us with a fun story about the daughter-in-law, Addie, who lived in the house at one time. There was an exhibit on satirical art/cartoons on display on the second floor of the house, but quite frankly we were so taken with the intricate artistry of the house that we didn’t even bother to look at that. Perfect rainy day activity!
