点评:Abbotsford is an amazing place to visit. It's a beautiful house with a wonderful walled garden full of late summer blooms, a miracle and testament to the gardener(s) considering the dismal summer we've had.
We went on a dreich day, always the best kind of day to tour stately homes and the drizzle pops the colours on the flowers as opposed to strong sunlight that bleaches them.
At first we were a little put out about the car park charge as we were paying for entry but it was very modest and we saw a few dog walkers using the car park to explore places away from the house and gardens, so understandable.
The entry fee was modest compared to other places. And the volunteer staff were super helpful and friendly, able to answer my questions and help me locate things I was interested in.
Unlike many other stately homes, Abbotsford has Sir Walter Scott's passion for collecting obscure trinkets associated with Scotland's legends, although dare I say he was probably responsible for those legends.
We were offered the guided audio tour that most visitors accepted but I already had a familiarity with Scott and the house, and prefer to explore and research at my own pace, connecting the curiosities with the legends associated with them.
Overlooked by everyone who we saw there were the book titles. Scott's mass collection of rare books are more than just ornaments. If Abbotsford wanted to add to the attraction then transcribing the full library into an accessible interactive digital library attached to the museum area, would result in a lot more frequent visits. Or even having them transcribed and republished for sale in the shop would help boost funds.
The gift shop was overpriced but there were still gifts available to suit everyone's budget for the souvenir hunters.
If I was forced to find a gripe, it would be the positioning of the health and safety items (emergency exit signs, lighting, security cameras, and extinguishers) were sometimes in places that took away from the perfect photo opportunity, but that's hardly anything to complain about.
It was a brilliant day out and a big shout out to all the Sunday volunteers for making the long trip from South West Northumberland worth the while. Abbotsford did not disappoint.
