Great museum and ship, but needs a cafe

点评：This was one of the attractions we'd come to Dundee to visit on a weekend break.
The museum is well located next to the V and A on an interesting stretch of tidal riverside.
The Discovery Ship lies in a large dry dock next to the museum. The museum self guided tour begins with various fascinating exhibitions that cover the building, provisioning, crewing and planning of Scott's two trips to Antarctica. Between rooms there were also several films that set the scene and show the severe conditions that the whole crew experienced in the Antarctic while they spent two years there on the first trip alone. Then returning for a fateful trip to try to reach the South Pole.
We were totally absorbed for several hours inside the exhibition. Then we went outside to visit the ship. This is undergoing a huge programme of restoration ( Nov 2024).
So inside it's very interesting but needs better interpretation and maybe a room guide person to explain what's what.
Back inside the museum I was disappointed that the shop didn't have many books to bring the story to life, only accounts of some of the scientists and a biograohy or two.
I felt there should have been a good guide book to the museum that built on the exhibits. For example it was mentioned that Discovery had a rudder and propeller that could be raised to protect it from ice and to service them. No where was this expanded upon. I'd like to have seen more detail about the multi layered construction of the hull. I think a guide book could have expanded on the and other technicalities.
Finally unfortunately the museum doesn't have anywhere to take a coffee or rest with a snack or get lunch. We would have spent more time there if we hadn't had to leave to get some lunch.
It's a fantastic museum but needs a bit more thought to improve what's on offer.
