Impressive exhibition about a 1901 Dundee built Polar expedition ship

点评：I must confess that I did swallow rather hard when the very friendly Allie on reception said entry was a flat fee £17. 'Valid for a whole year', he added, enthusiastically.
To be frank, the best view of Robert Falcon Scott's 1901 expedition ship, RRS Discovery, is for free outside, but, after 38 years in the Royal Navy and Reserves, I was keen to board the ship.
More of that later, but first, your money does bring a huge array of exhibition spaces, films and plenty to look at during a visit. I spent a couple of hours, but I could have lingered in the exhibition spaces for a lot longer.
On board the ship, you can see why they charge so much. Some of the hull is in a dreadful state and sourcing suitable wood is far from easy - or cheap.
I loved the fact that the officers' cabins are all around the wardroom and are actually about as spacious as those on a modern warship. Ropes to hall the sails are impressive, as are the towering masts, where the latest fundraising idea is to clamber up and abseil down. Even at my prime, such escapades were not for me.
All in all, it's well worth the money. The exhibits are very well done - and the ship certainly needs the cash.
'Valid for a year' is, to me, a bit of a con, but it seems to be the way of the world in many museums these days.
As a postscript, I was fortunate recently to visit Discovery's successor, RRS Sir David Attenborough, the one the public voted to name 'Boaty McBoatface. Even with her luxurious accommodation, I still do not fancy months in the chilly, windy, Antarctic.
