National Mining Museum Scotland的点评
点评：The admission fee was a really good price, we opted for the passport to support the mine. We booked onto a tour before we arrived. The car park is well adapted for disabled patrons, wheelchair access throughout the mine with the exception of the winding room. There are cobbled areas outside so it can be a bit tricky for wheelchairs.
We had a warm welcome, all the staff there are amazing people! We used the lifts which have mirrors placed to help wheelchair users reverse safely out of the lift to get to the tour.
Tour guide Ally was a delight. Engaging, knowledgable, cheeky and really great at shepherding a varied group of folk through the inner workings of the amazing building. From demonstrating lamps, explaining technical workings and giving us wee stories from the miners lives, he really brought life into the exhibits around us. He was really great at making sure my wheelchair using hubby could see exhibits and also wasn’t too far behind. The wheelchair access around the tour as mentioned before was really good.
We decided to break for lunch as the tour flew by (it was around and hour and a half but we could have listened to Ally talk all day!) there were a couple of issues in the kitchen due to renovations, but the staff were amazing and handled everything really well. They deserve special recognition for still providing gold star customer service when building work was going on and the kitchen was affected. Really tasty soup, sandwiches and cakes with a fantastic choice. Dining area was really pleasant and comfy to sit in and my family and I enjoyed a game of Jenga from the box of books and toys provided.
After lunch we walked round the other exhibitions, all were well laid out, signage was informative, easy to read and engaging. Displays were fantastic and the mannequins were pretty entertaining! There were some intricate and amazing moving models as well as photos of the miners at work and at home. The amount of carefully curated items and displays was impressive. We also had fun spotting the cats craftily hidden amongst the displays.
We also checked out the art exhibition and then ended our trip in the interactive room where we built arches, learned about air pressure, fossils, hydraulics and cogs in the most fun ways!
All in all we spent over 5 hours exploring.
I’d like to say a massive thank you to the staff there today, they really made the visit extra special. They were all friendly, kind and gave fantastic customer service. They’re a great team. They made our wedding anniversary awesome. They made our day awesome!
One thing I’d like to see is a bit more variety in the gift shop. As it was quite high end merchandise (tartan bags, pottery, whisky merch and books on mining) it would have been nice to see some items representing the museum itself. Some postcards of machinery, magnets or pencils. A fab idea would be little trinkets made of compressed coal dust. It would be nice to have a memento of the actual place.
All in all a great museum, filled with interesting exhibits and stories, run by a fantastic staff team.
