German Underground Hospital的点评
点评：We were on a Princess Cruise ship tour of Guernsey, and the German WWII Underground Hospital "Hohlgangsanlage 8" was one of our stops. This is an interesting relic, and if you have any interest in WWII (and you should) then this is something you should visit. Construction started soon after the Germans occupied Guernsey in 1941, and it was first designed as part of an elaborate underground tunnel system that would connect all the German fortifications along the coast. It would also give the German infantry a place to withstand the anticipated aerial bombardment that would come as they built up their forces for the invasion of England. By 1943, it became clear that Germany was not going to invade England, but instead the Allies were getting ready to invade Europe. At that time the tunnel network (which was still unfinished) was changed into a 500-bed emergency hospital, which was never used. I was surprised to find out that it was built by a combination of volunteer workers from Guernsey who were paid four times the going rate for their work, along with forced labor (German POW's from Poland, France, Russia, and the Ukraine). There are information boards that tell you about some of the history, along with displays of items to see. Some of the tunnels have hospital beds in them, but there is really not a lot to see except the tunnels themselves. Note the several escape ladders and hatches that would have allowed someone to reach the surface without going out the tunnel entrance. In many places the floors were damp and wet, so wear appropriate shoes. The temp was quite pleasant in July, but they say it can get quite cool in other times of the year. It was a fascinating place to tour.
