点评:My 13 y/o son and I performed this hike by parking the car at Tamarack Outdoor in Waterton and taking their shuttle up to Cameron Lake trailhead. Shuttle ride was well worth the price and the driver provided helpful hiking details on the way up. Overnight parking is free and unrestricted in Waterton providing that you purchased a park pass. When carrying backcountry camping gear - highly advisable to top up your water bottles at summit lake. The steady climb from summit lake to the Carthew summit itself consumes more water than I expected. Once at the Carthew summit, the next water source is within 30 mins on a downward trail trajectory (upper Carthew lake).
Alderson Lake campground has 4 standard tent pads in great condition. Three out of four pads have some tree protection for shade/wind. The last pad has a great mountain and lake view but the trade-off is higher exposure (no shade/wind protection). Outhouse is clean, reasonably tolerable smell, and has a new conveyer foot pump system. The campground is very close to the lake and the lake itself is calm and majestic. The mountain walls surrounding it are exquisite. Every few hours you will hear the occasional rumble of rocks falling from erosion. We stayed 2 nights at this campground so that we could enjoy one full day enjoying the lake. Would advise other back country hikers to do this as spending a day at lakeshore is very relaxing. Lots of trout in the lake if you want to add that extra weight to your pack. My only major gripe about Alderson lake is a). No picnic tables! (such an oversight) and b) Poor signage. You really have to search to find the bear lockers. The bear lockers (4 in total) are in good shape and located in a small depression that is not too far away. This small depression can become a very large puddle of water in heavy rain making the lockers become an island in the middle🫤. Don’t be too alarmed to hear rustling in the bushes in the early morning at camp as deer tend to visit in the early morning hours. For one of our nights we were the only ones in the campground which was unusual considering the weather was hot and sunny and still August peak season.
If heavy rain makes you pack up earlier than expected, rest assured that the hike from Alderson campground to Waterton is 6.8km on a gentle downward slope. It took us about ~2.5hrs to complete in heavy rain. There are flush toilets and garbage cans at the trail exit in Waterton.
