点评:Everyone who comes to Bibury, comes to see Arlington Row, the very picturesque 14th century terrace row of weavers' cottages. Most don’t bother with St Mary’s Church.
Arlington Row is swarming with sightseers but once you walk just a little further around to the church, you leave almost all of the crowd behind.
Built in the 11th century, this ancient Anglo-Saxon building has a large, solid, square tower and turrets that run along the tower and the roofline, making it look a lot like a miniature castle.
If you visit on a weekend in summer, the chances are high that there will be a wedding. If there is, you won’t be able to go inside. This happened to us a number of times during our stay in the Cotswolds (I suspect that most of the lovely Cotswolds churches are busy with weddings throughout the whole of spring and summer).
Although we weren’t able to go inside, we were still able to look around the churchyard.
It has a number of interesting features. The main entrance had been carved in the 1100s by Norman craftsmen who decorated it with a trefoil and palm-leaf carvings.
Nearby there’s a well-preserved Saxon gravestone set into the wall. It’s a long slab decorated with interlinking rings. Originally there were several of them but most were sent off to the British Museum so it was kind of special to be able to see this one in situ.
Several curious tombs with rounded, barrel-like tops caught our eye. These strangely shaped stone chests were ‘bale tombs’ built for wealthy wool merchants (we often saw a them at various Cotswolds churches).
The arched tops are supposed to represent the bales of wool that made both the merchants and the towns so wealthy.
