Well worth a visit - better than expected

点评：Belated review of a visit in August, apologies if mixed up with mixed Christmas reviews. First visit, always wanted to see this Victorian monument to wealth and social standing, and better than I expected. The grounds are run by the NT so no entry fee, with a pleasant walk from car park to main house and grounds (a shuttle bus for those not walking). Lovely rural setting and good walks as well.
I expect the house was regarded as a tad ostentatious in its time but has mellowed into an elegant style of its own and is well presented with some fantastic artwork which only a seriously wealthy family can display so casually. Tickets to the house were booked separately (and charged for) so not as crowded as the grounds would suggest. Well worth a visit and definitely up there as a top tier stately home.
