点评:It’s obvious that this fascinating, big rambling property presents some real challenges to the National Trust, and on the whole I think they pull off an interesting and enjoyable place to visit.
They obviously don’t have the money to furnish the interior, so only two rooms are open. One of these is a second-hand bookshop, where the volunteers give a really warm welcome.
Outside, the rather flat square frontage has a good view across fields to distant hills, but the rear and sides of the house are more quirky and attractive.
We enjoyed pottering round the walled gardens and orchards, and there’s some colourful flower-planting round a circular pond.
Behind the house, paths lead down through woods to a shallow river, where we saw some beautiful wildflowers and heard lots of birdsong.
Next to the river is the exquisite working watermill, which was the highlight of the visit for us. We bought flour and had lovely chats with the millers.
Including coffee & cake in the stable yard of the house, the whole visit took us about 3 hours.
