点评:I wanted to give a 5 star review but took a star off because of the attitude of two of the guides - more about that later.
Dunster Castle is stunningly beautiful and very well located in the Somerset countryside. You enter via a long driveway to the car park. The car park is a decent size, but fills very quickly during peak times, so you may end up parking on the grass laybys along the drive. Through the entrance, there is a a bit of an uphill climb to the castle which could prove a bit of grind to the more unfit/infirm visitors. That said it really isn't too bad, just be prepared. The Castle itself is fairly complete as I believe it has been rebuild in it's later history with just a few parts dating from it's earlier period.
Getting to the main entrance and this is where the problems began. I had shown my National Trust membership card at the previous entrance, but sometimes, at NT properties you need to show it again at the main entrance. Entering through the huge doors I was met by a large, very haughty female guide. I asked if she wanted to see my membership card. She rudely brushed me aside shouting, "I don't want to see your card, how on Earth do you think you got this far without one"! I tried to get her name to report her attitude, but these people always hide there ID badge under scarfs etc, but she swiftly left me standing there in a state of shock. Right after that, an elderly male guide asked if I wanted to purchase a guide, I replied that i didn't. Instead of leaving it there, he made some comment to one of his colleagues about me missing things because I didn't buy one! I prefer just to explore these places, not be held to ransom over a guidebook! Moving on, the other guides around the castle were fantastic!
There are also huge grounds to explore, including a short walk to a watermill. This was staffed by volunteers during my visit, and were producing their own flour which I believe you could purchase.
There is also a tea shop that sells drinks and refreshments at the usual NT prices. However, on the day of my visit the staff there seemed to have only just woken up and totally lacked any enthusiasm in their work.
I would visit again, but I'd be ready for Miss haughty this time!
