点评:Hughenden was the home of Benjamin Disraeli a former Prime Minister of the UK.
Along the entrance road to the property there is a hut at which visitors are requested to stop to show passes or make payment. My advice for those with walking difficulties is to request transport by buggy from the car park, before proceeding further uphill to the car park. There are dedicated blue badge parking bays in the car park. From the car park there is a downhill woodland walk back to the reception hut before joining a roadway for a downhill walk to the house.
On entering the property there are four downstairs rooms to view. There are some information plagues but the level of lighting was slow we were finding it impossible to read them without reverting to using the lights on our phones.
One item on display was the 'spare' chair. Disraeli had commissioned the chair to be carried aloft after being elected to Parliament. However he lost the election and the chair was not used hence being called 'spare'.
During World War 2 the house was requisitioned as a secret bombing map making establishment. A room along a corridor is now dedicated as an exhibition of this vital work. Look out for a cartoon by Cecil Orr (Edward Cecil Parker Orr) 29 September 1909 - 23 August 1965. Born in Glasgow he became a freelance artist at the age of 18, and before the war worked for Associated Scottish Newspapers. He was best known at that time for drawing the "Susie and Sambo" cartoon for the Glasgow Daily Record. During the war he served with the RAF and thereafter returned to a career as an illustrator and cartoonist his work appearing in numerous newspapers and comics.
We were fortunate to visit when a talk was about to commence on the life and career of Benjamin Disraeli. The talk was extremely interesting enhancing our visit to the property. The room in which the talk took place had limited bench seating which was somewhat uncomfortable, others sat on the floor or stood throughout. More quantity and comfort of seating would be appreciated particularly as the talk itself was so good.
The tour continues upstairs where the lighting is much better. We visited Disraeli's study, his wife Mary Anne's Boudoir, their bedroom and a dressing up room. The bedroom features portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in an elaborate twin frame presented to Disraeli by the Queen with their names written in her own hand. There are pictures of Prince Albert hunting, Queen Victoria with Mr Brown, and of other members of the royal family. The room guide in the bedroom provided us with a great deal of information about the artworks.
Our tour of the house concluded with a visit to the dressing up room where there were rails and trunks containing period style clothing for both adults and children to dress up in, providing the opportunity for some fun photographs.
Onsite there is a café, small bookshop, shop and toilets. Dogs are welcome throughout the site other than inside the house where only assistance dogs are allowed.
On leaving the Manor the road passes a church (not connected to the Trust) in the grounds of which is located the Disraeli's grave. There is a parking area for those who wish to visit the grave.
