点评:Finding locations to take our u3a industrial heritage group can be a challenge and it is a joy when a venue is welcoming and makes everything so easy.
We arrived for refreshments before splitting into two groups to tour the hangars. We learnt a huge amount about the history of the company, the design process, the learning moments (accidents!), the people and how it fitted into the wider societal changes.
It was amazing to learn the story of how the first Mosquito prototype was saved by a canny workshop manager so it did not end up on the bonfire. We marvelled at the bomb load the plane could carry and the number of variations which were built. Most of us could not imagine ever getting in through the door, let alone managing to fly, navigate and aim bombs within the cockpit.
But there were other planes too and as we walked through the fuselage of one of the Comet jet planes, it brought back memories of when aeroplane seats were comfortable, one had legroom and smoking was permitted (although we were all glad that was banned!).
The volunteers are all very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions - it was a thoroughly enjoyable visit and, once again, we all left knowing there were things that we had missed because there is just so much to take in.
