A 50-Year Dream Realised — Absolute Heaven for Aviation Fans!
Ever since I built model kits as a young lad 50 years ago, visiting the de Havilland Aircraft Museum has been high on my bucket list. My wife and I booked a two-night stay at a nearby hotel specifically for this visit, and it exceeded every expectation.
The main attraction for me was, of course, the Mosquito—and seeing all three beautiful examples under one roof was breathtaking. Standing right in front of the very first prototype (W4050) was a genuine bucket-list moment.
Beyond the Mozzie, there is so much more to see. Stepping onboard the Comet—the world's first transcontinental jet airliner—was a real highlight, alongside the extensive collection of other aircraft and de Havilland engines on display. One of the absolute best parts of the experience was being able to wander into the workshop areas. Getting a close-up look at the spare parts and fuselage sections really reveals the incredible balsa-and-plywood "sandwich" construction that made the Mosquito such a marvel.
The atmosphere is fantastic—there’s zero pressure or hassle as you walk around, but friendly, passionate staff members are always nearby if you want to ask a question. To top it off, there’s a lovely on-site café complete with an outdoor seating area for a nice break.
Whether you're an aviation fanatic fulfilling a childhood dream or looking for a great day out, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Kids would absolutely love it, too!
