点评：Yaawwn. This Regency house was remodelled by the architects of the Ritz at the turn of the 20th century and it would seem that their intent was to leave it as characterless as a hotel. There’s nothing architecturally to recommend this, it’s boilerplate Edwardian, yawn again. It has one nice but uninspired view, from the terrace, looking across fields and woodlands. The gardens are small and pretty unprepossessing; I’d missed the roses but honestly there weren’t enough rose plants to feel I must have missed something special, in fact there were signs saying the roses are struggling due to drought and soil issues, so no loss, I suspect.
But. But. It would appear that whether they admit it or not, NT appreciate the fundamental weaknesses of this property. They’ve worked hard to create a huge play area for kids which was being enthusiastically used. There is every type of mobility assistance known to man (book ahead to be sure). There was a really good exhibition (much better than the house’s chattels, which are largely awful barring some Jacobean furniture and some surprisingly naturalistic paintings of children from the late 18th/early 19th century) which linked in with one owner’s abiding love of fashion and her place in high society. There was a small but good Faberge collection which echoes the current Cartier exhibition at the V&A. And there was a great jazz band playing on the terrace for part of the afternoon.
I was genuinely shocked to see this got a Travellers Choice award when I came on the website to review it, but on reflection, if you’re looking for a lovely day out with all the family, this WOULD be a great place to go. I just wouldn’t recommend that you visit specifically for the house.
