点评:We always adored this eclectic, charmingly furnished home, full of personal items that belonged to the family and were displayed with panache.
On what will be our last visit now, we left feeling utterly disappointed at the presentation by its current house manager.
In order to facilitate group tours, the current curatorial house manager had changed the interior presentation from magnificent interior ensembles of lived in rooms that were viewed from an entry point allowing the wow factor, to overly excessive access that meant the removal of cabinets, bookcases (replaced with photographic alternatives) object d’art and family collectibles.
It has now become soulless and bitty.
The bedroom was always displayed with Shaws wardrobe open showing his cape, shirts and quirky undies on the bed, shoes and slippers on the floor and a general air of residence.
Now, what we saw was his wife’s bedroom used for conservation and the above said furnishings covered in dust sheets!
This sanitisation is happening in too many NT properties, such as Dyrham Park, Kingston Lacey, Newark Park & Tyntesfield, who all reduce rooms shown and put magnificent collections away from view.
Sadly because this is the last straw for us, the massive bequest of our entire million pound estate we had drawn up for the NT will be rescinded, and probably be given to Newport Preservation Society in the USA and the Preservation Society of New England, who are proud of presenting the collections within their historic furnished homes beautifully.
How Sad!
