点评:Charming house in Smallhythe steeped in history and with a curious former owner, Ellen Terry.
Very interesting, particularly the importance of Smallhythe as a port because it’s so hard to visualise in the modern landscape!
Ellen Terry’s personal effects also very interesting, including her famous stage costumes. The barn theatre a lovely surprise as it doesn’t look like a theatre from the outside!
Volunteers very enthusiastic and clearly very knowledgeable about the Terry, the property and the surrounding area.
Tea room built in an old farm outbuilding, “windows” are plastic sheets so I imagine it’s cold in winter but have to say with floral table cloths, fresh flowers on the table and bunting strung across the exposed beams, it only added to the rustic charm of the property.
Smallhythe place is only small but a pleasant and enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half or so. Would definitely visit again.
