An excellent insight into island life through time, plus some added history

点评：Yet another unique heritage museum, we were now making these a must see on our tour. The Skye Museum of Island Life takes you back in time of how the people of Skye lived. The seven traditional thatched cottages, offers visitors a unique experience and a true insight into island life 100 years ago. It is an experience that really helps you understand how the islanders really lived, with numerous displays and information boards it is both unique and informative .
Walking into the museum is like stepping back in time to an ancient Highland village. Opened in 1965, the aim of the museum was to completely preserve a township of thatched cottages, each depicting the conditions that 19th century crofters faced. They certainly hit the mark on this.
Among the many displays, is the old Graham family home, the village smithy, the weaver's house, and a See a vast array of crofting implements displays, equipment and Highland history. Take time to explore each one in turn, don't miss one. We were quite lucky the day we visited as it was not too busy and we had time to wander at our leisure.
There are also pictorial and historical archives, including the story of Flora MacDonald, who famously disguised Bonnie Prince Charlie as a spinning maid and smuggled him to safety.
The museum is near the monument of the Highland Heroine Flora MacDonald, which stands proud on the hillside above the museum.
The museum staff were very friendly and helpful with our questions. There is a small souvenir shop that offers quality gifts at reasonable prices.
Definitely one not to miss if you are on Skye as a bring a real perspective to island life in the past, sedately realistic.
