Limited Sight but Incredible Experience
Cascade Pass的点评
点评：Cascades Pass is a 6.7 mile, 1,784 vertical foot hike that is one of the premier activities in NCNP. If you have read my other submissions on NCNP, you know if you make it to Cascades Pass, you actually become one of the few to make it in the actual park. So this was a hike I had been looking forward to for 7 months planning the trip. Unfortunately, a thick fog blanketed the pass and valley and prevented us from seeing more than 100 yards in front of us the day we planned to hike.
As we were here, I was hiking no matter the conditions. While I would have loved to see the mountains, I was impressed by the hike. The old growth forest you hike in is amazing. It is so thick that you are sure you will see Bigfoot here. With that said we did not see any significant wildlife until getting above the treeline. Still, the switchbacks were numerous; however, they made the 1,700 vertical foot hike feel not as tough. My wife commented that despite the numbers, this was not a difficult hike.
As you reach your last switchback you begin a long walk to the pass as you exit the forest for the alpine tundra and scree field. I would have loved to see the views from here but in the fog, it did feel like something out of Lord of the Rings. Here we did see pikas, marmots and chipmunks as well as numerous wildflowers. Even in the fog, you could see the beauty. We eventually made the pass, but you could see nothing. At this time there seemed no point to climb to Doubtful Lake so we returned down. I will also say the wind which was not there in the forest had picked up considerably and it was very cold at the pass which also encouraged us to return to the bottom. When we returned, the fog had lifted from the valley, and you could see the glacier on the other side. That was neat to see.
All in all, I hate that we could not see, but it did not totally detract from an amazing hike. I am very glad I got to actually get in the park and hike even if my views were limited. The forest and the meadows as well as the glacier when we returned were all incredible. I can only imagine how amazing this would be with a view.
