点评:Located in the small Medieval picturesque town of Bacharach, are the ruins of a historic chapel dedicated to a young boy, age 16, who died in 1287. Unfortunately, and unfounded, Jews were blamed for Werner’s death. 40 Jews were murdered and their communities wiped out.
For many years the Werner Chapel became a pilgrimage site. Eventually, the pilgrims wore thin and the roof of the chapel collapsed when the Stahleck Castle above blew up by the French in 1689.
Werner became a “Saint.” In 1963, the Diocese of Trier stripped the sainthood and apologized to the Jews on the unfounded allegations of Werner’s death.
It is doable walk-up the stairs to see this skeleton of the chapel. If you continue up the trail you will come to the 20th century refurbished castle of Stahleck. It is today a youth hostel with marvelous views of Bacharach and of the Rhine.
On the next hill over is a tower known as “Postenturm.” One can take excellent pictures of the ruins, of Bacharach and of the Rhine.
We had the pleasure of staying in Bacharach for four days in early June of 2023. This village today is a World Heritage site. Most of the town is designed in the German half-timbered Medieval architecture. One can easily stroll through this lovely village.
We stayed at the Rhine Hotel with the famous German restaurant called Stubers. It was a fine accommodation, even with the trains nearby.
Across the tracks is a lovely riverside park. Most recently, in 2016, a statue of Victor Hugo, Clemens Brentano and Heinrich Heine was erected honoring these men to their contribution to Bacharach. Not far is a W.W.I monument honoring the men in Bacharach who died in several wars. The Maltese cross is flanked with German helmets can still be seen on the monument.
We took a 30-minute ferry to St. Goar. Along the way we saw the famous bend in the river known as Lorelei. St. Goar is famous for the Rheinfels Castle, largest castle along the Rhine.
We did manage to take a train to Ramagen and see the remains of the famous W.W.II bridge. Another day we went to Cologne. That city is well worth staying in for at least 3 nights.
Seeing Bacharach even for a day is well worth it. If you found this review to be “helpful” in anyway, please click “Thumbs-up” to let me know.
