点评:I was thrilled to visit Quidi Vidi Village Brewery in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on June 15, 2025, after hearing some glowing reviews. The scenery, with breathtaking views of Quidi Vidi Lake, lived up to the hype (8/10 for location). However, our experience was overshadowed by extremely poor service that led us to leave without eating.
We encountered a short lineup at the entrance, understandable given the brewery’s popularity. The downstairs host was funny and engaging, creating a welcoming vibe (hosts rated 7/10). Upstairs, there was another brief line, but we were entertained by a fantastic live band. The singer’s incredible voice and the band’s infectious energy were a highlight (8/10 for entertainment). The secondary host, Alex, was smiling and accommodating, securing us a perfect outdoor table to enjoy the stunning surroundings.
The brewery’s interior was pleasant but unremarkable, resembling a standard bar-restaurant (7/10), and the terrace was 9/10. We knew they were busy due to a private event for 5 pm, so we anticipated some wait time and especially given prior reviews. Our waiter, Ben, greeted us at 3:10 PM, promising to return. When he did 15 minutes later my son and husband asked for beer recommendations; Ben suggested Iceberg Beer for both but seemed rushed, interrupting my son to address my husband. He warned us the kitchen was backed up and food would take 45 minutes, which we accepted.
Drinks arrived in about 10 minutes, which was fine, the Iceberg Lager Beer was good but not worth a special trip (7/10 side note the beer is made with iceberg water). The soup of the day did come at that time, which was more of a tomato sauce for pasta than a soup, it was ok nothing to rave over. Ben’s service, however, went downhill. He dropped off utensils while bending down to the table near my husband’s head Ben was yawning noticeably, which felt quite unprofessional, I thought ok maybe he is tired and it is a lot of work, although I would never do that or find it acceptable from my employees. After that, he vanished. We waited patiently, enjoying the scenery and music, but by 5:00 PM—1.5 hours after ordering—no food had arrived, and Ben hadn’t checked on us once until that point.
I asked a staff member cleaning a nearby table if waiting this long was normal. He said no and went to get Ben. He came and asked to refill my drink then when he came back my elderly mother asked how much longer the food would take, expressing her hunger, Ben quickly responded defensively. A little visual, the table sits 4, my mother and I were in the back side towards the lake sitting across from each other and my son and husband were closer to the restaurant door, Ben was standing near my son when my mom asked and he then stepped forward towards her and my son, speaking at lightning speed: “I told you there was a backup in the kitchen, I told you 45 minutes, if you’re not happy, we can cancel the order…” His tone was aggressive, and he continued despite my calm request for him to slow down and breathe. I explained that 1.5 hours was double the promised time, but he doubled down, raising his voice and repeating that we were “told.” At this point, as he clearly was being more aggressive, I stopped listening. His behavior was unacceptable (0/10 for the waiter if I could give less I would).
Though I initially wanted to stay since we’d waited so long, my husband and son were upset by Ben’s attitude and insisted—we left for a place with respectful service. As we departed, I spoke to the Alex, who was kind and apologized sincerely, though it wasn’t his fault, but nothing else was offered like, maybe we can find you another waiter...
In all my years of dining out and traveling, I’ve never been spoken to or treated this way at a any restaurant especially to an elderly woman saying she was hungry.
Recommendation: I wouldn’t return to Quidi Vidi Village Brewery. The scenery and live music are excellent, but you can enjoy similar views at nearby food trucks or visit another brewery on Water Street, which we found offered much better service, even with a short wait. If you do go, I HIGHLY hope you do avoid Ben as your waiter and don’t mind potential delays.
Tips for Visitors:
• Check the brewery’s event schedule in advance to avoid peak crowds, especially during private events, which can cause delays.
• Opt for off-peak times to improve your chances of faster service.
Ratings:
• Location: 8/10
• Live Music/Entertainment: 8/10
• Hosts: 7/10
• Interior: 7/10
• Beer: 7/10
• Waiter (Ben): 0/10
• Food: We only tried their soup of the day, tasted like tomato sauce more than a soup. But given the rest, the extremely poor service and from what I saw coming to some tables it was greasy and thrown, on a child, looking plate. Many had leftovers on their plate as well. Beer though was flowing at almost every table. I did see the kitchen walking out and they are working little slowly but working, they even greeted us as we walked by which was nice.
For a better experience and not such a tourist trap, try the nearby food trucks for comparable views or the brewery on Water Street for MUCH better service. I’ll share more about our trip, including hotels, tours, and other dining experiences, in the next reviews and for those that do follow me on other media’s, I will post this and my other reviews there as well as usual.
