点评:When the French took control of Strasbourg, they looked to place their mark on the city with a building to be the administrative and executive center of French government. The building was intended to serve as the home of the prince-bishops who ran the city for the French crown but also to be a symbolic representation of France in a German city. Completed in 1742, the building was built adjacent to the Cathedral in a French Baroque architecture with a statues, reliefs and painting emphasizing Catholic dogma. For the Grand Ile, the Palace is uniquely French and has hosted French rulers such as Louis XV, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon, Josephine and Charles X.
Today the building host a number of museums from archeology to art. A visit to one of these allows you access inside the building. I happened to visit the Museum of Fine Arts which was enjoyable. However, the highlight for me was simply seeing this building. I must confess that while I had known of the change of city in the 19th and 20th centuries, I was not at all familiar with the city's 1000 years of German origin or that the French took control so late that this governing building would be younger than many structures of Colonial America.
I still believe the churches and places of Strasbourg are the highlights of the city, but this building and the Palace du Rhin are "Must Sees" as well to see how France and Germany looked to display their culture and control. It is a beautiful building in the center of the city that speaks to the French history and culture of this region. No visit to Strasbourg is complete without seeing it.
