The Coliseum Rises Again
Oldham Coliseum Theatre的点评
点评：I am a proud member of the Save Oldham Coliseum group (now called Friends of Oldham Coliseum). I started the petition, which gained over 15000 signatures, and I was so overjoyed to be able to update all the signatories after the street party on 8/7/24 that we had won, Oldham Council has in fact decided to save Oldham Coliseum.
I was absolutely overwhelmed by the good news, which we did find out before the local election in May 2024, but had to keep under our hats, as the council is not allowed to make such big announcements before a local election.
It is the culmination of all our hard work for over a year now, headed up by Julie Hesmondhalgh (of Coronation Street,Mr Bates vs The Post Office etc) and her husband writer and director Ian Kershaw, with the mighty backing of the people of Oldham, and surrounding areas.
I was crushed when I found out it was closing in 2022. The last performance was the prophetically titled Encore on 31/3/23.
The building, while a bit shabby currently, is the one of the oldest theatres in the country, from 1887, and I have many fond childhood memories of pantomimes watched there, in the beautiful and well preserved auditorium.
I am so glad it is now going to enjoy a £10m refurbishment, and will reopen in time for panto 2025!
