点评：I was delighted to revisit the Bendigo Joss House Temple, arriving right at its 10:30 a.m. opening time on Saturday. I was warmly greeted by a knowledgeable and friendly staff member, who shared captivating stories about the temple’s history — including the origin of the word Joss, derived from the Portuguese Dios, meaning “god.”
Once, Bendigo and its surrounding region was home to at least eight Joss Houses. Today, this temple stands proudly as the last surviving example. Constructed in the 1870s from handmade red bricks, it features three distinct sections: the Caretaker’s Residence, the Entrance Chamber with its impressive Main Altar, and the serene Ancestral Hall.
In 1964, the National Trust stepped in to save this remarkable site from being converted into a carpark for the neighbouring Ordnance Factory , an act that ensured this important piece of Bendigo’s Chinese heritage would be preserved for future generations.
The Bendigo Joss House Temple is more than a striking historic building; it’s a living reminder of the Chinese community’s enduring contribution to Bendigo’s story. The collection of artifacts and their accompanying tales offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into the city’s multicultural past.
