点评：What a day! We hired a private boat for three hours (at what I believe to be a more than reasonable price) and proceeded to have the time of our lives navigating down the canal, with a picnic on the boat at the lock. I fully recommend it. I was a little anxious since I had never driven a boat more complex than a pedalo. The instructions were clear and simple to follow, and the driving part was fun and easy. Other waterway users are understanding and traffic is generally slow. Beware when mooring. Ideally two people should work on this. I think weekdays are less busy than weekends and might make for a quieter experience.
I recommend doing the three-hour journey, so that you can moor at the lock, get off the boat, have a wander and a gander (fascinating technology), and why not have a picnic and a drink on the boat? The journey to the lock only takes about 50 minutes without stopping, so there's plenty of time to enjoy the canal from the boat, the wildlife and the sights.
It is a true delight to see the ducklings and waterfowl wading around and the swallows take swift dives around the boat. Truly it feels like taking a stroll through the world of The Wind in the Willows. The private boat affords one far more freedom and pleasure I believe than the longboat cruise, although the latter, it is true, goes further past the lock.
In any case, a great experience and fully recommended!
