点评:This summer I made it my mission to go to as many professional summer stock theatres as I could in ME, NH, MA, RI, CT. Theatre by the Sea was my 10th ( and I still love it).
We say Heartbreak Hotel which was a truncated bio of Elvis with over 40 songs.
First let me say the production was fantstic. While not much to look at in the line of scenery with a pretty bare stage, this was easily compensated by with the fantastic lighting which stole the show!
The cast of 30 was outstanding and loaded with talent. I cannot even fathom the amount of costumes that needed to be maintianed because the changes were many.
I cannot say enough incredibly professional they all were. Once again I was reminded how much better small theatres are as compared to those in Boston or New York.
The history of the building as with most of the other theatres I have visited is interesting. Purchased in 1920 it was a summer camp for girls before it became a barn theatre in the 1930s. It hosted many old time stars like Groucho Marx, Mae West, and Marlon Brando. The theatre retains its barn like quality with rough hewn beams and nooks and crannies that house lighting operators.. Clearly, the builiding has be retro fitted with some sort of cooling and in the balconly there were a couple of fans on stands. These were annoying because they oscillated and on us the whole time ( horrible for contact wearers or those with dry eye).
Another minus is the seats are not pitched at a steep enough angle in the balcony so if you are under 6 ft the person in front of you with obliterate the stage to some extent. I suggest you go for first row balcony.
There is a bistro open only for the evening show but it did look like the menu would be universal appealing to many and a great way to have a meal before the show because there are not a lot of restaurants in the area.
The only reason this venue got 4 stars is becuase of the pitch of the seats. Otherwise it is fantstic!
