The experience was poor.
The trails have not been improved to be enjoyable in wet conditions. The mud was 8-12 inches, it was slow-going, ugly and the horses hated it.
They put our son(first time on a horse) on an irritable, unsafe horse WITHOUT asking who had experience on horses. When it was apparent my son could not handle the horse; they would not let me switch and the guide in the back was rude and impatient. Their solution of putting the horse on a lead with the front guide was not any safer as the horse continued to test my sons ability to stay in the saddle.
I was on an older horse, in her last season before retirement, and told to kick her hard to get her to keep up. She did not need to be kicked. She preferred a little distance from the horse in front of her. She made a path-choice and then she executed her chosen path with strength and grace. Asking her to follow on the horse in front of her's ass was a poor choice for her. Our back guide was annoyed with me for allowing my horse to wait for the horse in front to pass completely through difficult areas before going but then they were commenting on how wonderfully and powerfully she was performing.
The guides chose a very steep trail turn around because we were out of time. The front guide stopped to watch us go up which meant we had to stop on the slippy muddy trail and when I was yelling for her to make room for our horses to get to the top on level ground, she was irritated and had to be asked repeatedly to MOVE. That is a basic guide skill and was very surprising that she lacked it.
The Owner and his son were lovely but the experience was unfortunate.
