点评:Standen house and garden has improved massively since the last time we visited about ten years ago. I have no hesitation now in giving it 5 stars. We went as a family with 11 year old twins and spent the whole day there. First, we just loved the vegetable gardens at the back of the house. They are extensive and very beautiful with complementary planting and lots to see, you go up and down little paths and each one is different. There's also a gate in the hedge leading through to an orchard area and also a meadow with lots of wild flowers, at this year mainly setting seeds. Clearly someone is taking a lot of interest in the gardens. We noticed too that some of the produce is used in the cafe. I would guess for garnishing baked potatoes, etc. Although I am not too impressed by Philip Webb's talent as demonstrated in this house, (windows small, overall shape of the sprawling and ungainly, etc) the fixtures and fittings are beautiful - it's a showpiece of Arts and Crafts objects and design. We liked the Japanese prints which were particularly interesting, but also the idea of hanging fabrics on the wall, the fantastic collection of William de Morgan pottery, etc. There was also a certain amount of information about the family who lived there, the artists and craftspeople and the way of life. The tearoom in a large old barn was atmospheric. The menu was better than many you get in NT houses now, although the cups of tea were still like water (a sad comedown from what we used to get in NT houses. They should take a lesson from the excellent tea served in nearby Down House). There was a good shop with a nice plant display in the courtyard. The kids loved the games areas....these are a great introduction and their availability influenced our choice of where to spend the day. I hope they can continue.
