St Mary's Church, Whitby - an unusual church
St Mary's Church的点评
点评：One of the most unusual churches I've ever visited and I've been to quite a lot of churches in my lifetime!
St Mary's is in probably one of the prettiest locations in the UK, high up above the lovely fishing town of Whitby. If you are visiting the Abbey, visiting St Mary's is a must. But, and this is a big but - don't ask if Dracula is buried in the churchyard!!
Seriously though, if you like quirky churches, St Mary's is for you. It's full of box pews from the 18th century and has a rather imposing pulpit where the vicar could look down sternly at his congregation if they were falling asleep.
The sanctuary and high altar aren't automatically visible, but can be found past the pulpit and between two twisted pillars. These pillars also support the Cholmley Family pew. The Cholmleys acquired the Abbey lands after the dissolution of the monasteries.
Entry to St Mary's is free, but donations are welcome.
