点评:Totally free to take on this challenging walk along a pebble beach. The longest pebble beach in the world and it's on the Jurassic Coast in West Dorset. Start from Portland or West Bay. Do all of it or just a leisurely stroll along the Pebbles for 20 minutes purely for the experience. Good weather is preferable.
Chesil Beach full length walk.
My third and final attempt at boxing this off; properly! Six years ago, clearly inexperienced, I walked to Abbotsbury from Fortuneswell, purely on enthusiasm only. I hadn't realised how very tiring it was to walk on those shifting pebbles. So I gave up after ten miles due to not having time available to complete the entire walk. I hadn't taken refreshments either. When I reached Abbotsbury car park cafe, a wooden shack with serving hatch, they were about to begin closing. They refused to serve me any refreshments because they were closing. I offered to pay double, just for a canned drink and a chocolate bar. They spitefully refused. The can and chocolate were within arms reach. It would have been an effortless task to quickly serve me.I even offered that they keep the change from ten pounds? still No! However, their last customer was sitting in his car with his family and overheard my situation through his driver window. He asked if I was ok. I explained that I had walked along the Chesil from Portland and was feeling a little dizzy. Without hesitation, this very kind man, gave me his hot, sweetened coffee, because he understood that I was close to collapse. I'll never forget that gentleman (Thank you whoever you are. I often remember you.) and I haven't recommended that cafe to anyone since.
Six years later, still filled with enthusiasm, I did the entire walk again but walked further than I had intended to, due to being given the wrong advice on route by a good intentions tourist. They made me aware of cliff collapse obstructions on route that I should be prepared to avoid by taking a detour around it. There was a cliff collapse but more towards the very end. So the detour I had taken had been unnecessary.
Still not satisfied that I hadn't truly walked the entire beach itself. I did it again on 24 September this year 2025. I planned the walk properly this time. I started at the Portland end of the beach and walked to West Bay, entirely by the pebble beach. Remembering that spiteful car park cafe, I made sure I avoided it. I took my own packed lunch and lots of treats. I had my earbuds and a stack of albums from my connected phone. Smiles all day.
The walk began from Fortuneswell, in morning daylight at 07:40, with a cold wind, which I knew would dissipate once I was around four miles along on my route. The land to my right would help to calm things down. I was right. Within two hours I had taken my weatherproof coat off and tied it to my backpack..Quick coffee, quick look around. Odd photos taken. Back on my feet. Tunes chosen, volume up. Happy Days. The weather became perfect the whole day long.
I did a Google review of this walk with Garmin evidence to prove that I had done it, photos too. See Chesil Beach review. I initially deleted an account with TripAdvisor due to them not allowing photos to be submitted that have already been submitted elsewhere. Friends have said TripAdvisor is actually a good site and that I should at least leave a review there as well as Google maps.
Now by beginning this walk at an early time of day, with a relatively high tide, gives plenty of time to cover a lot of miles along the beach to enjoy a lower tide towards the end, nearing West Bay. A wider beach at low tide allows for a greater distance of separation from the dangerous cliffs that often collapse. At high tide it can become dreadfully dangerous to pass virtually underneath the actual cliffs that are prone to collapse. In this situation most walkers would join the South West Coastal footpath, which runs alongside over the cliffs. Be careful there though because the authorities have had to close sections of that path too, due to landslides. There is a diversion in place and you must heed the advice given. I also found that certain sections of the beach at low tide offer a stable platform of hard sand and grit to walk upon. Pebbles alone are exhausting after several hours, so you would welcome the chance to increase your pace by taking advantage of those occasions.
Well, still smiling, I did it in surprisingly good time. Under 7 hours walking, not including around an hour's worth of rest breaks. My feet were ok, although at times I wondered if I had repetitively strained muscles in my feet, as the associated pain would indicate. After a change from pebbles to hard sand, that pain resolved itself as if nothing was wrong.
West Bay offers all you could want at the end of an arduous walk. Food, accommodation and pubs, etc. Just like any small seaside town or village. It's worth visiting again for a couple of days itself. Something I will do at a later date.
To return to the start, at Portland, you can opt for a taxi or bus. I chose the very less expensive bus, X53 to Weymouth. At Weymouth, the last stop, transfer to bus 1. That will take you back to Portland where you began the walk. Once back, I jumped in my car and drove to my rented holiday accommodation. I had a great day. It was a very satisfying walking experience. One I would only do again if paid to do so. It was hard. I don't envy anyone who gives it a go.
Good Luck 🤞
