A Wildly Fun Night of Lucha Libre at Arena México

点评：Going to a CMLL show at Arena México was one of the most fun nights of our entire CDMX trip. The energy in the room was unreal. All 10,000 fans were either cheering the heroes or booing the villains, and once you settle into the rhythm of it you can't help but join in. The acrobatics and sheer strength of these wrestlers were honestly jaw dropping. Flying off the top rope, three person aerial sequences, the masks, the costumes, the showmanship. It's a real spectacle.
The main event was a ROH World Championship match where Volador Jr. defeated El Bandido to take the belt. The crowd absolutely lost it. Volador Jr. is the son of the original Volador, which we learned is a whole tradition here. So many of the wrestlers carry a "Jr." in their name because they're literally the sons of legendary luchadores who came before them. Multi-generational masks. We loved that.
The one thing I'd love to see added is a bit more between the matches. Maybe a quick announcer break, or short interviews with the wrestlers so the crowd gets to "know" them a little better. With so many luchadores across the night, a little personality and backstory would go a long way.
Bonus: after the show we got a photo with Star Jr., one of the winners of the Copa Jr. VIP 2026 eliminatoria. Super gracious about it. The wrestlers seem genuinely happy to interact with fans on the way out.
Pro tip: get there about an hour early and head to the food hall directly across the street. About 15 stalls, mostly tacos and pizza, plenty of micheladas and margaritas, and the night we went they had a Mexican fútbol match on the screens. When Mexico scored, the whole place lost it. Such a fun warm up to the main event.
Five stars across the board. If you're in Mexico City on a Tuesday, Friday, or Sunday, do not miss this.
