点评:Monday 28th April and we visited the coastal town of Lyme Regis. The main purpose of our visit was to locate the elephant statues sited here as part of Stampede on the Coast.
As we walked around the Town looking for the statues it was an opportunity to explore and sightsee.
One of the places we visited was this old Mill which has been lovingly restored, prior to our visit we did not know of it's existence. It is now a cobbled courtyard, an artisan place which is home to a pottery and craft studio, cafes, restaurants, galleries, silversmith, a craft brewery and more.
The restored Miller’s Gardens is also here and it's planting is based on a seventeenth century selection of flowers, vegetables and herbs.
The Mill is now operational and milling again, when open it is free to visit with tours and milling displays available.
From information boards around the place we learnt of it's long a varied history stretching as far back as far 1340 when a licence was granted to build it.
In 1644 the Mill was damaged during the English Civil War, it was rebuilt in 1648.
In 1838 the Borough of Lyme Regis sold the Mill to private ownership, where it remained until 1890.
Commercial milling ceased here in the 1920s and in 1928 the Borough bought the Mill back and was then used as a Council depot. In the 1970's it fell in to a derelict state and plans were proposed for it's demolition.
It was spared and then restored and In February 2001, the waterwheel and machinery once again turned by water power. wholemeal flour was produced here for the first time in more than 75 years. In the same year it was opened to the public.
It was a wonderful find and a delightful place to walk about and explore.
