Rideau Canal - Jones Falls Defensible Lockmasters House的点评
点评：We just spent a week in an historic Parks Canada (Rideau Canal) house built circa 1842. Parks Canada rents out several of these homes through the Parks Canada Rideau Canal and Rideau Cottages websites. The House was built as a defensible structure on the canal system that runs between Ottawa and Kingston and housed for many years the people who operated the lock gates for the motorized boats and steamers that used the canal over the last two centuries.
So this house is now a short term rental or holiday let. In my estimation ideally located on the most scenic part of the canal system between Sand and Opinicon Lakes. Davis Lock is a gem, quiet and on a dead end road with little car traffic. Boat traffic was light. The busiest it got was when two war canoes full of 30 high school students came by enroute on the canal to Jones Falls and beyond.
The setting high on a hill above two channels is just excellent and the home itself is full of historic features (gun slits and a wallpaper mural found in the walls to name a few). However there are modern touches that made our stay so enjoyable. It was fully updated in 2016. We ate al fresco for 6 nights on the patio overlooking the canal and the sunsets on the west side of the house were breathtaking. The fall colours were amazing. Our days were taken up with canoeing on the lakes and canal channels and hiking nearby in Murphy's Point Provincial Park , Westport and Jones Falls. It is a wildlife viewers paradise in this part of Eastern Ontario. We observed 9 deer, 15 wild turkeys and a dozen painted turtles as we hiked and canoed .
The Rideau Cottages staff member Robin who rented us the place and the Parks Canada workers who operated the lock were exceptionally knowledgeable of the area and a pleasure to deal with during our stay.
