点评:I’d visited Gairloch Museum in its old home, and found it a bit sad and moth-eaten, so, even though the new home had won Museum of the Year in 2020, my expectations were not high. But I could not have been more wrong, and we found everything about the museum to be captivating and enjoyable—not just the displays, but also the imaginatively stocked shop and the excellent cafe. The displays are really outstanding, and reminded me of the equally fine new Perth Museum. I’m not usually a fan of interactive and digital displays, but here they really added to the experience (and they all worked!). The geology room alone was worth the price of admission (and that’s a sentence I never thought I’d write!). You’re encouraged to watch the 25 minute film, and I certainly recommend it: really insightful and evocative. Some have commented that the building (a former Cold War command post) is too bleak a setting, but I really don’t agree. I thought the different spaces were intriguing and exciting and I liked the way plywood had been used extensively in the displays to match the ‘brutalist’ architecture rather than try to hide the nature of the building. Including lunch, we spent more than three hours in the museum, and now want to come back to walk the archaeology trail!
