点评:Fantastic museum of Soviet and Russian military aviation, for both specialists and ordinary people like me. Also wonderful for families, as there are tons of opportunities for kids to run around and actually enter and have fun in all sorts of aircraft, from pre-Wright-Brothers to now. We're talking about acres! Organization is key for a non-Russian speaker to come here. Here's how I did it: I had an English-speaking Russian guide-translator who had his own car. We drove the 90 minutes or so from Moscow to the village of Monino, on the outskirts of which is the museum. We were the first ones to arrive, because I wanted to be sure to have a tour, with a museum guide, of one of the planes. That tour cannot be arranged in advance. One must arrange it on a first-come, first-serve basis at the museum ticket office. Here's how it turned out: we went up to the ticket counter when it opened and asked for the tour of the plane. That was fine. Then, on the spur of the moment, we asked the ticket person if there was someone on the staff who could give us a tour of the entire museum. And lo and behold, there appeared Andrey, a delightful retired Russian military pilot, great guy, who took us all around the place. He asked us whether we were specialists, because if we had been, he would have geared the tour in an entirely different way. He adapted to us. Two wonderfully engaging hours, with Ivan acting as Andrey's translator. Then, it was time for the airplane tour, so Andrey turned us over to a man-and-woman couple who were also retired Russian military pilots, both of them. They treated me beautifully. I'm an older person, awkward in my physical movements, and they helped me throughout. Great experience. By this time, many more people had arrived, but the airplane tour was limited to 15 or so people. The others on the tour with us were all Russian families with kids, all very surprised to find an American on the tour. Wonderful to have this experience, with real Russians. It's not particularly inexpensive to do all this, especially as a single person -- it would be much less expensive per-person for a group of 4 or 5 - but what the hell, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. The other charming thing about this place is that it's not at all "gentrified". It's extremely old-fashioned, 1950s-style presentation, reminded me of my childhood in Maine. We had lunch in a tiny, cheap Uzbek hash-house in the village and visited the eye-opening outdoor market as well, which exposed me, at least, to a certain level of poverty which one does not see in Moscow. Great, memorable day in all ways.
