点评:A prominent fort on the end of the headland, it’s quite noticeable from Weston-super-Mare and somewhere I had been meaning to visit for some time. First problem was finding somewhere to park. Although the car park is not a bad size, it was completely full when we arrived, and that was mid-week, out of season. We waited and eventually found a space when someone left, but I can’t help thinking it would be a good idea if they reserved certain spaces or a section of the car park for NT members. It’s quite a hike to the fort, firstly up a lot of steps which give fantastic views up and down the coast, and then quite a walk out along the headland to the fort.
Although it’s semi-derelict (no roof) at least all the walls remain, and there was enough there to give you a feeling of what it was like. In fact even the roller that you to cover the hatch from the canteen is till there, albeit very rusty! Information boards give a useful account of what you’re looking at and the history of the place, and there’s enough different sections to wander down or around to maintain the interest. Inevitably there is a café on the way back to the car park, although there’s also an independent one in addition to the NT offering. Overall, an interesting spot and a pleasant walk, as long as it’s decent weather.
