点评:Bald Point SP is one of my favorite parks. I am obsessed and go very regularly. I think everyone would like Bald Point SP in the colder months. There will be few mosquitoes, no biting flies, and the weather will likely be sunny. It is also a winter shorebird and seabird haven. I have seen so many species including Bonaparte's gulls, brown pelicans, ruddy turnstones, American oystercatchers, dunlins, and marbled godwits. Adorable and perfect for photos! Truly the only downsides of going during the colder months would be that some days might get too cold for Floridians and the water will probably be too cold for anyone to comfortably swim. But it will still be nice to relax on the beach, take some photos, hike, etc.
Bald Point SP is also one of the few places I can tolerate in the warmer months, although keep in mind that if you're not used to Florida summer it will probably still be very unpleasant. There will indeed be mosquitoes but with some deep woods DEET bug spray, I can tolerate the mosquitoes here whereas they're completely unmanageable, even with bug spray, in many other areas. There will also be biting flies, but they're mostly only a problem in late summer. Remember that deer flies are attracted to the head region, so a hat with a bug net will help somewhat. Also try picaridin on skin and permethrin on clothes. Spiders won't be nearly as present as they are in more densely forested areas. It will be extremely hot, but I (and probably other Floridians) am used to this. Please wear sunscreen and bring lots of water, especially if you plan on hiking. But the water will be nicer for swimming in the summer and being in the water will repel biting flies!
There are several hiking trails through the pine forest. Lots of Eastern towhees, Carolina wrens, red-bellied woodpeckers, brown-headed nuthatches, etc. It is also the only place I've spotted a common nighthawk in the daytime rest on a tree, which as you might guess by my username, was absolutely delightful. There are also thistles that bloom in the late spring and they get quite tall. Don't underestimate the pine forests! Although they're sparser, less flowery, and hotter than other forests, they contain special wildlife. But in addition to the pine flatwoods and coastal areas, there are some oak thickets and marshes so there is plenty of natural diversity in the park.
In addition to hiking, swimming, nature viewing, and photography, you can fish, kayak or canoe, roller blade, and bicycle in areas throughout the park. Nearby outside the park, Alligator Point has a public beach area that is quite nice. Across the bridge in Wakulla County, there is nearby Mashes Sands beach which is cute as well. Angelo's is also nearby across the bridge in Wakulla County and it's a popular seafood restaurant. There's also a tiki bar in Alligator Point.
Love this place so much!
