点评：Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois, isn't what it once was. It doesn't hold as many people. The old green, wooden press box is gone. So is the Block I in the west balcony. And Chief Illiniwek. The surface of the field that Red Grange and Dick Butkus once played on is artificial turf, not natural grass. But the seat in the top row of the upper balcony on the east side, where I watched games in 1958 and 1959, is still there. So are the 200 columns on the east and west sides honoring the University of Illinois graduates who died in World War 1. Built in 1923, it is one of the oldest surviving stadiums in the country. Recently, it was renamed Gies Memorial Stadium for an Illinois alumnus who donated $100 million to the athletic department. The stadium wasn't officially dedicated until 1924, when Grange scored six touchdowns to beat Michigan in one of the single greatest performances in college football history. Today, the Marching Illini band is as good as ever, the hot dogs are better, the Illini football team is ranked among the top 25 in the nation and Grange Grove on the west side of the stadium, home to tailgating and partying and class reunions, is a popular gathering place for students and alums before and after games. Before a recent game, I arrived early, as I used to when I was a student, and walked all the way up to the top row where I once sat. From there, it was like watching a game on TV. At halftime, it was so much fun to watch Chief Illiniwek weave his way through the band before doing his ritual dance. Sixty-five years after living on campus for four years, a block away from Memorial Stadium, I still recall fond memories of the experience.
