点评:I wanted to share a disappointing experience from my recent visit to the Wye Valley Visitor Centre (Butterfly Zoo) so that other families, especially those with additional needs, are aware.
When I visited with my 7 year old autistic son, all the disabled bays were taken, so we parked in a standard bay. The nearest pay machine was broken, and the instructions directed me to use the Evology parking app. I followed this, paid for 4 hours and had a confirmation on the app of the time we were covered until, and we went inside. We paid to enter the Butterfly Zoo but had to leave after just 44 minutes when my son became overwhelmed.
Days later, I received a £60 ParkingEye fine (rising to £100). I appealed, explaining the situation, including the fact that the app must have failed even though it showed my payment as successful at the time. My appeal has now been rejected.
What’s most upsetting is that the landowners LRF & ET Heyes, who manage the Visitor Centre, have the power to cancel charges but have refused to do so, despite being fully aware of the circumstances and the impact on a disabled child and his carer.
This whole experience has made me realise I cannot safely visit sites like this alone with my son. It is extremely disappointing that a family attraction is not more inclusive or compassionate in how it deals with disabled visitors.
⚠️ A word of warning for anyone visiting: if the machines are broken, do not rely on the Evology app — even if it tells you your payment was successful. Check your bank account afterwards, or risk an unfair fine.
We enjoyed the Butterfly Zoo itself, but the distress caused by this parking charge, and the complete lack of support from the site’s landowners, has ruined the experience. I will not be returning, and I feel other families should be aware before planning their visit.
