点评:The Gallery is best combined on your way to/from a Blue Mountains trip. It’s about an hour out of Sydney and another half hour if you’re continuing on to Katoomba so its’ an excellent mid-way point to break the journey.
Although not well known outside of Australia, Norman Lindsay (1879 - 1969) is the much-loved Australian artist, sculptor and creator of classic books like The Magic Pudding.
Walking through the gallery is like stepping into a time warp. It’s housed inside his original home that he shared with his model/muse/lover, Rose Soady, and is set on extensive grounds.
Try to time your visit so that you are there for the free tour. It made a big difference to our visit and there are a couple of areas, like his painting annex and the etching studio that you can’t access on your own.
The annex has been preserved exactly as he left it, with an easel, unfinished paintings, a suit hanging on the wall and a small (not very comfy looking) bed in the corner for late night painting binges.
Inside the house, the rooms retain all the permanent fittings like fireplaces and cornices, but not his furnishings or belongings. However the walls are filled with his paintings and etchings, many of which still look risqué even now. We see decadent Bacchanalian scenes of naked women, colourful exotic harems, and nudes cavorting with satyrs. And surprisingly, there are also a lot of models of boats. In his spare time, Lindsay was an enthusiastic model boat builder.
Sculptures and fountains are scattered throughout the gardens that surround the house. My two favourites are the Seahorse Fountain and the sculpture of a satyr chasing a nymph. If you have the time, it’s well worth going for a wander down some of the bush paths where you will come across more sculptures, his hidden bush pool, and very scenic native bushland.
