Good trails for walkers and spectacular Red Kite action

点评：We arrived here by taxi, and made a start on the hilly Ridgetop trail walk. It was quite windy but there were great views of the Melindwyr Valley and surrounding area. If you're a nature buff and interested in wildflowers and fungi you won't be disappointed (keep your eyes peeled!). We completed this trail in about 1.5 hrs. Then we did the shorter Miners trail walk before having lunch by the visitor center picnic benches. A shame the VC and cafe were closed - we were told that both had shut from March 2025 due to funding cuts. However, there's a cafe/snack van that serves until 4:30pm and portaloo toilets next to it. If you happen to use the disabled toilet next to the one for staff, look up at the Barn swallow nest because at the time we went, the adults were flying in and out feeding the chicks. We walked up to find a good spot opposite the Red kite feeding area across the lake. Quite a crowd gathered before 2pm and you can see the birds swirling in the wind. A member of staff appeared by the hide and threw some butchers' off cuts and they came swooping down. Amazing to watch. The only minor annoyance was having to endure the odd selfish behavior of one togger who moved almost right in front of me whilst I was videoing the bird feast, his camera in his left hand clicking away furiously whilst stuffing a baguette into his mouth with the right hand. Generally everyone else was well behaved and respected personal space. Once the birds had their fill and flew away, we continued on the Balcud trail walk (again a short one) and had plenty of time to wait for the taxi at 4pm to get us back to Aberystwyth.
