点评:MI5: Official Secrets is a National Archives exhibition organised in collaboration with MI5. It explores the history of the Security Service from its foundation a few years before the start of the First World War through the turbulent Second World War and Cold War periods to the recent focus on counter-terrorist activity in the last 30 years or so. On display are original case files, photographs, spy cameras, and witness statements from captured spies. You can also learn interesting facts about various spies such as members of the Cambridge Five spy ring, who leaked state secrets to the Soviet Union, as well as German spies who were turned into double agents by MI5 during the Second World War.
The exhibition also has some interactive and video elements such as a video of the current Director of the MI5, spy clothes you can wear, and audio reconstructions of original interrogations that you can listen to. There's also a computer game in which you solve puzzles to uncover a potential double agent, but we couldn't try it as it was too popular.
After the exhibition we took a brief walk in the area around the archives where we enjoyed the lovely surroundings and got to see a few of the swans that swim in the lake nearby.
The exhibition closes on 28th September and there's no need to book tickets. However, it's very popular, so the best time to visit is during the week or early in the morning on weekends. We were told that no more visitors were being admitted today, but we took our chance and we joined the queue anyway. We were lucky enough to be allowed inside in a few minutes but if you live far away, you might not want to risk not being able to enter as there's not much else you can do in the archives.
