Oban War & Peace Museum的点评
点评：Walking along Oban's esplanade the Old Oban Times building tends to stand out from the more modern buildings, little di d we think it housed one of the most fascinating museums we were to visit.
Run by local voluntieers who have a real passion for the heritage this museum contains. The War & Peace Museum contains an extensive collection of artefacts, photographs, an accounts of Oban's history. Depicting the rich cultural history of the busy port town and its people.
By wandering through the museum you an awesome background to what Oban has been about from fishing and maritime industries, the coming of the railways, road transport. along with the strategic role played by Oban during the war years when the town was home to Australian, Canadian and US aircrew and RAF Flying Boats operated from the bay. From major sea battles to commando raids there are detailed accounts of them all and how local men and women were involved.
Uniforms, medal and memorabilia from both war and peace are everywhere to really appreciate this wonderful array we spent a lot more time than we though we would , but not one minute was wasted.
Shinty a local sport along with others are featured. There are displays tell the story of the first transatlantic telephone cable link, the operations of the Northern Lighthouse Board, our local emergency services, the construction of McCaig's Tower and the history of the museum itself.
Having walked around we then spend some time talking to the local volunteers. This is something you must do as the visit would not be complete with out some interaction with these amazing people. Admission is free, but make sure you add your donation to ours.
Museums like this are vital in preserving the local and national heritage of the past and a foundation for the future.
