点评:We love Ponca State Park SOOO much, when we go to other state parks or even tried living in another state for a year, this park was missed & thought about quite often! I am so glad we are back in NE to be able to come here! We are 2.5 hours away. We stayed in a cabin last month and are staying in one next weekend! Cabins 9-12 are the rustic old ones that have not been updated much and that's how we prefer them! They are only $105/night. They have a bunk bed (full on bottom), a private bedroom with a queen, a full kitchen & full bath. Our coffee pot was broken last month and they drove out a brand new one in the box still within 20 minutes! The trails are vast, awesome, hilly, a GREAT workout, but trails along the tops of the hills too for people who don't want to break a sweat. You can hike along sand bars GALLORE. I have found fossils there, Antiqqus Bison bones (we just had ours identified yesterday by a paleontologist yesterday from last month's finds). I've found a big chunk of a killer clam shell (paleontologist identified) and Antiqqus Bison skulls & lots of Bison teeth too (SUPER fun to find for kids)! Last month, we hiked the sand bars for about 3 hours. There were shallow warm spots the kids played in for hours. There were tadpols so small they were hard to see (by us old adults)! One of our kids yelled "EAGLE" & dove in to the water. I thought he was just 'playing". I turned around and an adult eagle was just hanging out right there in a giant cottonwood tree. There are turkey's EVERYWHERE. You see them but it's fun to just hear the gobble. There is wildlife GALLORE! We've driven around a corner and a fox den was right there with babies sticking their heads out with mama's head too. You can NOT stay here without seeing deer. Birds of EVERY KIND if you're a birder. GREAT place for photography. Tent camping is AWESOME! They added 4 new campsites right along the river (RIGHT ALONG) that they keep mowed and it's great green grass if you want barefooted people to hang out. There are tons of tent sites. It's worth it to get there, drive all around and pick out a spot, then reserve. Go during the week for your first time to get a feel for the park and pick out location(s) you like. You can also camp near the river with a gravel/sand road with a small play area outdoors for kids. It's a great site (towering hills/cliffs, etc) but too dusty for us, at least for a tent. I would recommend the rustic cheaper 9-12 cabins. They are in their own little private area and that's all there is up there! The new(er) ones aren't that much "greater". If you're staying at a state park, if you want luxury, you're just not going to find it anywhere. We stayed 2 nights in a newer cabin ONCE and agree, cabins 9-12 are WAY better. We've never had any roaches in those. There are great, HUGE screened in porches. Again, if you want perfect or luxury, go to a hotel PLEASE. We don't need any "Karens" out there to ruin our trip(s). If you want more updated, there are "middle" cost ones (the one we stayed in 2 nights) and then the newest ones that we've never stayed at because of price and they are out in the open, visible to everyone staying around there. Again, go during the week at first and "find your spot at Ponca"!!! It's a HUGE park. If you want to buy ANYTHING at their small gift shop, you must be rich, however, so if you have kids, have a loaded wallet! Small price to pay for the park however. It's worth every penny you pay! Also, THEIR firewood bundles are cheap and great sized! Do NOT bring your own wood! If you have a "roach phobia", bring your own local wood. There are wood roaches (all natural, can't do anything about it) and there are usually a couple in the wood bundles but not BIG ones and I have a major roach phobia....I still buy it from them. I have been tent camping there since my early 20's and now that I'm 50, I enjoy the little cabins! But we will tent camp again there! The bathrooms have been updated but not commercialized. There are plenty of "outhouses" for bathroom breaks near the river, etc. Oh, you can hike along the river forever going East from the boat dock. That's where we have found most of our fossils. There are beautiful rocks and PERFECT skipping rocks!!! You'll also find beautiful butterflies, wild flowers and "regular" bones, etc (deer left over bones from coyote dinners, etc). You're right along a cliff all along there. There is BEAUTIFUL drift wood ALL over this park. If you like drift wood, GO TO PONCA STATE PARK! If you love the outdoors & aren't freaked out by actual natural things (bugs, not roaches, in the shower(s) with you), you'll LOVE it here! You can find COOL moths, etc in the showers! Explore & enjoy, rather than complain! Stoney Creek Hotel is 30 minutes away, stay there please. Let the nature lovers enjoy nature!
Oh the "Karen" complaining about the "cabin smell". It's a state park in a VERY wooded area, RIGHT along the MO river. If you want a sparkling fresh smell, stay in a hotel. And the other 2 star complaining about lack of trail maintenance is also pretty stupid. It's rugged, it's not commercialized like all the other state parks. It's been updated, a small water park like "feel" but FAR from "commercialized". Mahoney State Park is about as commercialized as it gets. We LOVE Ponca because it's NOT commercialized and conforming to the rest of the state parks! It's impossible to enjoy all the trails without downs trees, etc. Some you just can't get to because they are rugged and out in the 'middle of nowhere". Have fun, figure out how to navigate any obstacle you run in to. We however, have never come across a problem like that. Some trails you are on the edge of a very steep "cliff"/slope and if you fall off, you'd better hope a tree catches you. It's awesome the diversity of the trails. Be sure to see the 850 year old tree that has stairs down to it. Good to climb and great for photos!
